Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when a pair of track officials crossed the track immediately ahead of his car

The alarming incident happened on the third rotation when marshals were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to swap his compromised front wing

Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"

"I came out on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals dashing across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"

Security Issues Highlighted

"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We fail to grasp how on a live track safety personnel can be allowed to just dash across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"

Official Investigation Underway

The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the events

"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was notified that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the governing body

"On lap three, track officials were notified and made ready to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch marshals were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was shown in that section"

"The examination is ongoing what happened subsequent to that time"
