The Lithuanian government will destroy smuggling balloons, government leader states.
Lithuania will begin to eliminate helium balloons carrying illicit goods from Belarus, the country's leader announced.
This decision follows after foreign objects crossing the border necessitated airport closures multiple times over the past week, affecting holiday travel, while authorities suspended cross-border movement during each incident.
Border checkpoints will now be closed indefinitely in response to the helium weather balloons.
According to official declarations, "authorities will not hesitate to employ even the most severe actions during unauthorized aerial intrusions."
Government Response
Outlining the strategy to media, the Prime Minister confirmed military forces were implementing "complete operational protocols" to eliminate aerial threats.
About the border closure, the Prime Minister confirmed diplomatic movement continues between the two countries, and EU citizens and Lithuanians can enter from Belarus, but no other movement will be allowed.
"This represents our clear message to Belarus declaring that unconventional threats won't be accepted within our territory, and we'll implement maximum countermeasures to halt these operations," government officials declared.
Authorities received no prompt reaction from the neighboring government.
Diplomatic Measures
The Baltic nation intends to coordinate with partners regarding the aerial device concerns with possible discussions about implementing Nato's Article 4 - a protocol allowing member state consultation on any issue of concern, particularly involving territorial protection - the Prime Minister concluded.
Airport Disruptions
National air facilities experienced triple closures during holiday periods from balloon incidents originating from neighboring territory, affecting 112 flights and more than 16,500 passengers, according to Baltic News Service.
During the current month, 25 balloons entered Lithuania from Belarus, causing dozens of flight disruptions impacting thousands, Lithuania's National Crisis Management Centre told the BBC.
This situation represents ongoing challenges: by autumn measurements, numerous unauthorized objects tracked entering airspace from neighboring territory during current year, according to official statements, compared to higher numbers in prior period.
Regional Situation
International air travel hubs - such as Scandinavian and German locations - have also been affected by air incursions, including drone sightings, in recent weeks.
